What Words Do You Say About Yourself?

What words do you say about yourself? When you are talking to others, how do you describe yourself? And when you are alone, what comes out of your mouth? With the words you say, do you bless or curse yourself?

You may not even be aware of how you speak about yourself. But your words have consequences. The Scripture says out of your mouth proceed blessing and cursing (James 3:10). So which one do you use on yourself?

Here are 14 questions to ask yourself to find out whether you bless or curse yourself with your words.

1. What do you say about yourself when you are with others?

Do statements like this come out of your mouth?

  • I am not really good at that.
  • I could never do that.

Or do you say things like this?

  • I am working at getting better at that.
  • I am willing to try things I haven’t been good at before.

You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you (Philippians 4:13). When you say you can’t do something, you are saying the Scripture is wrong.

Think through the words that you say about yourself. Do you really mean the words you say?

2. What do you say to yourself when you are alone?

Does your self-talk sound like this?

  • I never get this right.
  • Why am I so stupid?

Or does it sound like this?

  • I am not where I want to be, but I’m getting there.
  • I am a work in progress.

Where do the words you say about yourself come from? Are they things you heard others say about you in your childhood or at work? Or are they things that God would say to you?

Death and life are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21). Reflect on what you say about yourself when you’re alone. Would you want anyone else to speak to you the way that you speak to yourself?

3. Do you believe you can change?

Do words like “always” and “never” come out of your mouth when describing yourself? Or do you believe that you can change?

Do you think that you will always be the person you are now? If you believe you can change, then make sure that the words you tell yourself will reflect that belief.

The words you say will either help you or hurt you. You get to decide what you want to have come out of your mouth. What you say about yourself will either build you up or tear you down.

Don’t let yourself go on autopilot. Remember what God says about you. By realizing your words will either bless or curse you, you will be able to direct your thoughts and actions—and the course of your life.
