What Would Others Say Your Priorities Are?

If someone looked at your life, what would they say your priorities are? I’m not asking what you say your priorities are. I’m asking if what you say and what they say would match.

Do you live the way you say is important to you? If you say your family is important to you, would your family agree with that? If you say your team is important to you, would they see it in your actions?

Here’s how you can find out if your priorities match what you say they are—and what you can do if they don’t.

1. Ask

I know it might seem scary, but ask them. Make the effort to ask the people closest to you what they believe your priorities are. Find out first hand if they feel like they are a priority in your life.

I realize that asking outright is a vulnerable thing to do. I know it could be uncomfortable. And you should be prepared to hear something other than what you wanted to hear.

But if you say they are important to you, wouldn’t you want to know if your actions are on target? And simply making the effort to ask them will show that you care. So go ahead and ask.

2. Pray

Most likely there will be at least one area that you need to work on. Go to God to tell Him where you fall short and ask Him to help you.

My wife and I have a very good marriage. And I have a great relationship with my kids. But I am always finding areas that I need to work on. And I ask for God’s help frequently.

The Scripture says if you lack wisdom and ask God for it, then He will give it to you (James 1:5). And He will not rebuke you for asking.

3. Change

Praying won’t completely solve the problem. God will give you the wisdom you need, but you must resolve to change. And then you have to do it.

The only one who can change you is you. You have to decide that you want to change. And then you must follow through.

Your stated priorities won’t just become your actual priorities. You have to live your priorities on a daily basis.

It won’t just happen. You have to work to make it happen. But it will be worth it.
