Why Obeying God Leads to Self-Actualization

Despite what others may tell you, gratifying your personal pleasures will not make you happy. In fact, it will leave you feeling empty. But obeying God will lead to your self-actualization.

Self-Actualization

God knows you better than you know yourself (Psalm 139:1-4). And God is for you (Romans 8:31). As a result, He knows what will truly make you happy.

Here are three reasons why obeying God will lead to your self-actualization.

1. God made you for His purposes.

God uniquely created you. He has something He wants you to do. You have the privilege of finding out what it is.

God made you to do good works that He prepared in advance for you to do (Ephesians 2:10). And your life will become a treasure hunt to discover His purposes for you.

To find out what God wants you to do, you will have to get to know Him better. As a result of getting to know Him better, you will also understand yourself better.

2. Obeying God will make you more of who you are.

When you seek out what God wants you to do, He will test your obedience. When you have been faithful with something small, He will give you a bigger assignment (Luke 19:17).

As you begin to do what God wants, you will find that you want more of what God wants for you. He will mold you as you go along, so you will be exactly who you need to be to do what He wants. He will gradually grow you up into who He wants you to be.

As you are obedient in more assignments, you will feel more alive than you have ever been. Because you will be more of who you are.

3. You will be happier doing God’s will.

You will find the more you obey God’s will for your life, the happier you will be. You will be acting more in your giftedness because it was how God made you. And He will strengthen you where you need to be strong, so you will be equipped to do His work.

You might never have thought that you would enjoy what God will call you to do. It might not be something you have an aptitude for now. It might not be what you even have an interest in now. But it will be exactly what He wants for you and exactly what you will be prepared to do.

When you are obeying God, your trust in God will increase. You will feel closer to Him as a result, and you will see how He knows you better than you thought. You will feel more of yourself, and you will feel happier. And you may be amazed at how much obeying God will lead to your self-actualization.
